2017 Honorary Chair
Anne Hillerman is delighted to continue the mystery series her father, the best-selling author Tony Hillerman, created beginning in 1970. Anne’s debut novel, Spider Woman’s Daughter, followed the adventures of Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn but with a twist. A new crime solver, Navajo Officer Bernadette Manuelito, is on the job. The novel, released by HarperCollins, received the Spur Award from Western Writers of America for the Best First Novel of 2013.
Her second mystery, Rock with Wings, was released in May, 2015, and quickly became a New York Times best-seller. The third book in the new series, Song of the Lion, will debut in April, 2017.
Anne was honored to be given the 2015 Rudolpho Anaya lecture at the University of New Mexico. Previous presenters include John Nichols, N. Scott Momaday, Denise Chavez, Simon Ortiz and Ana Castillo.
Before becoming a novelist, Anne worked as a non-fiction author and journalist. With husband/photographer Don Strel, she created Tony Hillerman’s Landscape, a look at places on the Navajo reservation her father used as setting for his stories. The book received many awards and was honored as the best photo book of 2010 by the Mountains and Plains Booksellers.
She and Don also collaborated on Gardens of Santa Fe, which was a finalist for the prestigious Eric Hoffer Award. Anne’s other books also include: Santa Fe Flavors: Best Restaurants and Recipes (winner of the New Mexico Book Award), The Insider’s Guide to Santa Fe, Children’s Guide to Santa Fe, Done in the Sun, and Ride the Wind: USA to Africa.
In addition to writing, Anne likes to travel, ski, and read. She lives in Santa Fe, N.M.
